Went into the local Wally World yesterday to check out their lights. Was amazed to find over half of their flashlight selection was leds. I impulse bought a Coleman 144 lu 3xAAA unit. Looks like M*g is falling way behind, most of their led units looked subpar lumen wise, IF they even gave the lumen rating.

The Coleman unit I bought was made in China, of course.

I keep visiting their flashlight aisle...just in case. But, I'm always disappointed. What do you think of the Coleman you bought?

Wally world is famous for having an occasional "gem" in their light department but also like to carry cheap subpar junk to sell to the masses with 5mm LED or using 3AAAs in everything. Their new black and decker LED lights are good stuff I think. I have the 2AAA swivel light and after replacing one of the 5mm LEDs with a cree I use this light almost every day. The 3AA 360 flex light puts out a bright square swath of light and is built sturdy too. Some folks like the 2AA penlight with the 3 lens colors.

A lot of the coleman ones while not the best build quality, arent the crappy 5mm showerheads or 1-2 5mm lights. Quite a few of the coleman ones use either XR-Es or XP series LEDs.

You get what you pay for coleman, not much more than that most of the time. Coleman has a lot of odd stuff I don't really care for like overpriced 3AAA based headlamps and lights, 2xCR2 based lights, 5mm AA based lights. I would love to see them make multimode 2AA based lights but instead they make a 6AA base light... weird their logic. AA is IMO the format local stores should strive for but they love AAA because they make more money off the alkalines than the AAs.

I have a few Coleman lights... I generally don't consider them to be a great deal but I did pick up a Coleman Exponent Mini Headlamp at Academy Sports for about $6 while they were on clearance. It's my only CR2 light and it's very small and lightweight. Overall a good buy for the price. I'm just waiting for them to drop more in price so I can pick them all up. :sssh:

Wal-Mart's flashlight aisle was much better just a year ago. Not sure what happened. But it has gone downhill compared to what you could find.

I believe it was Wally that brought us that Arc fighter, the Dorcy AAA, back in the dark ages. Kind of the Model T of small LED lights.

Geoff

It was more than a model T, the first gen dorcys had a circuit in them that rocked and could be modded to power a luxeon making it spank a $50 arc AAA for dirt cheap.

I'd have to agree with you Monocrom, they're selection used to be way different than it is nowadays. Although, since everything is going to LEDs at least a few of there lights have Cree XPE's in them. The Coleman for one, but I remember they used to stock Garrity and a few Energizer flourescent work lights, I still have a 7yr old garrity headlamp which I though was super bright back then. lol, about 8 lumens :) we're on our way with new technology, we'll see what the future brings, better and brighter..

The Dorcy-aaa sure was tough to beat in the bang for your buck dept,I have a few I still use now and then.

I used to spend serveral minutes, if not longer, checking out the flashlight aisle. Now I'm done in literally seconds. (Same situation with Target.) Things used to be better.

i really like my coleman maxx 2xcr2 115lm. got it at walmart few years ago, they still sell them, along with 3aa version of it, it uses cree led, not sure which one thou, looks like xr-e, but i might be wrong

I was at wal-mart yesterday waiting for the oil in the company van to be changed. I went over to the flashlights, and looked around. The only ones I found to be worth it were the ray-o-vac flashlights. They had a key chain light that was solar rechargeable, I figured for $3 it was a neat little light to go in my survival/first aid kit. When it got dark I was surprised to see just how bright that little guy was. It was worth the $3.

I have also bought a ray-o-vac headlamp that takes one AA from wal-mart years ago, I liked it so much, when they went on clearance I bought two more. I have been using them for over 2 yrs, and they haven't let me down. I'm kinda hoping they will die so I can get a much brighter fenix.

When I wasn't a flashlight guy I still recognized quality, and from time to time wal-mart has something to offer.

Well, that "Model T" is still hanging on my wife side of the bed.. She uses it every night when she comes in from work... Get pretty good mileage out of a AAA....

Gordon

PS.. I just remembered.. I have one of those Dorcy AAA modded with a UV led... ;)

Oddly, the Coleman 2xCR2 light is one of the few gems at Wal-Mart. But talk about a weird battery configuration.
