wanted emitters...

Seems like bare emitters are getting kind of scarce lately.I am looking for some bare, white Luxeon emitters for mods and am wondering if anyone can point me to a dealer with quick shipping and decent costs.I am not really looking for anything costly or great quality as I usually tear up a few before I get it right so I guess I am looking for some spare or average emitters....I have about 6 Infinity Ultras and plan on modding 2 of them.I have always used emitters from a doner light so I have no experience with actually buying these parts from a dealer.
I checked the B/S/T area and found most of the members offers were mostly sold out.A star is fine however I sometimes have trouble removing the emitter so a bare one is more of what I want....thanks

Bare emitters? Scarce? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Second the recommendation for PhotonFanatic. Great guy to deal with (I've bought nearly 20 LEDs and 10 reflectors from him). He's got everything you need, including some of the lower cost emitters.

Re: wanted emitters...

The easier shortcut to emitters from stars is;
#1 Bend both sides of the star a few degrees first with a pair of vise pliers, or in a vise.
Don't bend the leads.
#2 Desolder the leads, and the emitter usually falls right off.
#3 Clip some excess length off the fragile leads to protect them better.
Leave enough to solder onto though.
#4 proceed to carefully clean out any of the leftover junk attached to the pulled emitter.
#5 enjoy your modded light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Edit:
As for me, I'm staying with bare emitters as much as possible for nonstarred lights.

Re: wanted emitters...

photonfanatic saved the day for me.. also you can always buy from elektrolumens or from the sandwich shop.. i was havign a hard time because i wanted 150-200 emitters all of a simlar and high quality.. now *that* is not easy.. 2 or 3 or 5.. not a problem. I always ask wayne from elektrolumens first he has the best prices, than i go to the sandwich shop and ask wayne '2' what they have.. i've bought a lot from the shop.. and most recently quite a lot from photonfanatic.. he has a 'sale' going on the lesser performers (almost an oxymoron with luxeons)..

PS.. luxeons are very tough... i've heard of people wrecking them but i've also ripped a couple leads completely off before and you can cut enough plastic away to solder on to the stump inside the plastic.. one guy on CPF actually wrecked the 'dome' getting too close with a sander or cutter.. took the dome off completely and made his own optics (the dome is just over the top of the 'real' seal of silicon that is over the actual LED die).. in any event.. i've tried hard to kill luxeons, and haven't yet, and i've probably installed on the order of 30 or more now.

Re: wanted emitters...

My technique involves inserting a toothpick under the lead while it's on the star. Then apply soldering iron and fresh solder, once the fresh solder 'takes', you can push the toothpick forward. I use the kind that have sharp tips, so the diameter increases as I push it forward. Works like a treat, I stripped half a dozen stars for sandwich mods because I really like the Y0 bin. Since they're sandwiches, I clip the leads anyway, makes no difference once everything is mounted with epoxy and solder.
