I recently got a malkoff m61w dropin and was at a friends ranch checking on some fields and playing with the new led. I noticed that the warm led color got lost quicker than a cooler light would have, i was looking for a bit more throw and although the color is very nice up close i was wondering if less throw is a normal characteristic of warmer led's. If so would a normal m61 give me a noticable amount of extra throw or should I be looking at another drop in for my needs?

The M60 optic will provide substantially more throw than the (otherwise similar) M61 reflector.

Both versions are/were available from Malkoff in different tints. The warmer emitters do have slightly less total output than the cooler LEDs.

Also, the cooler tint may perceptually seem more evident at a distance than the warmer one, which has better and more natural color rendition.

There are several interesting ( & very technical ! ) threads around discussing these issues in incredible detail, too, but that is the basic summary :)

You need another dropin. The M61 is not designed for throw. The size, depth, and texture of the reflector are what's keeping it from throwing, not the tint or flux bin of the LED.
You might be able to see a slight increase in throw with a cool white M61, due to an increase in overall output, but the beam profile will be the same, so when I say "might" and "slight", that's exactly what I mean.
The M60 archimedes mentioned has a tighter spot with a noticeable increase in throw, but narrower and dimmer spill-notice it has less overall output, due to using a XR-E emitter, but more throw because of the beam shape the optic creates. Malkoff no longer carries M60s as stock items, but Oveready has them.
For P60-sized dropins, you might look at Dereelight's site, and Nailbender's thread in Custom and Mods for sale(there are other manufacturers and builders, I'm just not personally familiar with them). With a SMO reflector and XP-G, XP-E or even XR-E emitter, these are going to cost less and throw further than the M60, but won't be as robust.

Thanks for the input guys. If i go with the m60 would i be better suited to get the cool or neutral drop-in? I like the neutral/warmer color but my main priority is getting more throw. Finally i want to confirm this drop-in is tough enough to handle shotgun recoil if i decide to add it to a gun in the future. thanks for the help.

I suggest you get the tint you prefer, since that alone will have only trivial effect on throw.

BTW, Elzetta also sells M60's ... and their hosts might be of interest, too, given your question ;)

I've got a crelant with a warm white tint, you can definitely see a loss of lux compared to a cool white tint.

for throwers, stay away from anything that isnt cool white.
