Watching A Pursuit on L.A. Freeway

There's a pursuit being shown on TV in L.A. and the suspect's car is being lit up by a LAPD chopper with a Night Sun light (1 Million candlepower).

From a couple thousand feet, the entire width of the freeway is illuminated.

Pretty amazing.

It just ended without injury. Somewhat unusual to see these things in winter when it's cold outside.

Best night of TV I ever saw: Channel 2 Ray-duh ball, Channel 9 as your car chase station and Channel 13 Wraslin'.

It still gives me the willies just thinking about it.

I think those Night Suns have a lot more power than that. IIRC, around 40 million candle power

Car chases may be rare in your part of the world but in L.A. they are a daily happening.

i agree...as and when a car chase occurs it usually makes the newspaper headlines the next day. we don't get live reporting and helicopters chasing the runaway cars though. in some ways it must be exciting, or at least more interesting to live in the states /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I saw several segments of the chase on the 10:00 news last night. Started fast (120mph), then the tires popped and the car was shooting these yellow sparks behind it, and eventually, the car stopped, the guy got out, and surrendered.

I too, had wondered about the light the helicopter was using...typical flashaholic behaviour. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

i always wondered why the tires on getaway cars always seemed to pop at the most inopportune time, and was told by a friend that normal tires aren't made to handle the centrifugal forces for too long, which are caused when the wheels spin fast enough. is this true?

Do you know if they use an iris to adjust the size of the beam?

From last night's pursuit, it looked like they were throwing a lot of light other than on the suspect's vehicle.
