A few other options would be leader wire used in deep sea fishing, and use the correct size crimps to loop the ends.
Also 1/16" or 1/8" wire rope sold at Lowes, and purchase the appropriate sized swedge to loop the ends after attaching your clips.
Could also use latex tubing that is sold in the plumbing section and loop the ends over with some hog rings or look at some dog leashes used for small dogs, usually a large variety at the pet stores.
Good luck in your quest

A local radio-control store has a type of rubber fuel line for nitro cars/planes that has been useful as a lanyard for me. It is comfortable and has so far held up very well. I also use shock cord for its comfortable, practical use as well. It does not seem to hold much water when it gets wet.
