We've covered EDC, what about ENC...

'every night carry'...

For trips outside, like watering the dog, checking the gates, and general lighting while doing evening chores, what do you usually use?

Let's assume that we are talking about one light for general purpose usage, ignoring the fact that different lights are best for specific tasks.

My overall choice for brief nighttime chores wavers between my SF L1 and SF L5. The L1 is super for limited navigation purposes when taking the dog out to pee and on the low beam it doesn't disturb night vision. The high beam is also good for checking out noises in the shrubbery from modest distances.

I prefer the L5 when doing something more task-oriented where I need good general illumination, like checking under the car hood or in the truck toolbox. I like the 'wall of light' it provides, with plenty of spread.

The small pocket supernova lights seem too bright for closeup usage at night, and their battery life is limited due to their brightness. Sometimes brightness is not always best, and general broad illumination is preferable.

So what do you use or prefer, given the constraints above? I'm not talking tactical use, which is a different matter altogether.

What about those of us that have a light for all occassions (short of a spotlight).

My HDS works for all occassions. It's gots runtime on levels that aren't max. I got max for the night searches. Low level for reading a map or other close up work.

My HDS goes everywhere with me but my trusty TL3 on 17500s is my "taking the garbage out" light.

What do you mean? My EDC is also my ENC! - Fenix P1D-CE. The only exception is where the area might be a bit rough, and then the visual deterence generated by a Maglite 6D becomes useful.

My backup ENC would be the LED Lenser David 15, because the clicky and holster is faster in deployment than a twisty on my keyring.

I prefer a light with a long throw when taking the dog outside in the dark so I can search for other critters. I need to see at distances over 100 feet, so I usually take one of these:

Streamlight 4AA PolyPro Luxeon
Inova T4 rechargeable LED
old Maglite 3D with LED drop-in

Though they have less throw, I will use an Inova T1 or XO2 for the sake of variety. :)

The Inova T4 serves during neighborhood walks in the dark (unlit, rural roads). An Arc AAA-P is always on a neck chain for backup.

My McLux III PD-S goes everywhere with me day or night when out of the house. In the house I use my old McLux III PD. My HDS U60 XRGT also sees some EDC (and ENC).

Hrmm... EDC is an HDS Basic 42GT.

My favorite around the house light is a Solitaire modded with a sanded down Nichia CS direct driven on a 10440 LiIon cell.

For outdoors, if I'm going to be doing something consistantly with the other hand, my Streamlight TL-3 on 17500s is my go-to light.

Outdoors where pretty much I'm just walking and carrying a light, a U-bin modded Mag 2C with a nFlex controller is my choice.

Outdoors when I'm not looking for anything specifically and just have a light to light the way but not attract too much attention from game, a 2C with a SMJLED.

And sometimes when I'm feeling particularly geeky, I just might have all five with me.

I suppose the light best fitting the ENC category for me is the UK 4AA eLED which has been my go to utility light for a few years. Its wide flood, decent throw, flat regulation, and water resistance has earned it this place.

For general purpose-outdoor-nightly flashlights, Surefires have definitely been eliminated from my consideration. Sorry, Firstmain, but the Surefires simply are not as bright as other Cree-based lights on the market right now, and when it's OUTDOORS we're talking about, the more light the better to counter that blackhole that's the night. The Surefire L1 and L5 are downright pathetic in their meager output when compared to other XR-E lights THAT RUN ON AAs! The Fenix L2D CE puts out more than twice the amount of light and far out throws the aforementioned Surefires, and the L2D offers variable output as well.

my EDC and therefore my ENC too is my fenix L2D and I guess this will be for a very loooong time the case. it covers pretty much any given purpose from its 9 lumens mode (which I call "key find" light),to its 80 lumens mode (which I use for biking) over its 135 lumens mode (which I use for searching my dog in the field when he chases rabbits :bumpit: ), and its 135 lumens strobe mode (which I would use for disorienting a possible attacker). so there is really no reason for me to get another flashlight right now.

regards, holger

When walking around in the house at night, I might take a LedLenser Micro Lenser (with the BR435 cell) as it has a low and red output and does not impair my night vision.
Otherwise, for a little more light, I often take an ARC AAA with a red or a green led.

Should I go outside at night, which I seldom do, I take my Inova T4 (tiros) or my Surefire L2.

Kind regards,
Joris

Although I EDC a number of smaller, one-cell lights, if I know I'm going out after dark I grab my Streamlight 4AA PolyPro Lux.

From my understanding of the Fenix L2D CE figures recently posted on FlashlightReviews, the new L2D isn't going to out-throw the SL 4AA PP Lux or incand Surefires like the G2. That doesn't make it a bad light - it sure puts out a lot of lumens for two AAs, but it ain't a revolution in flashlights. . . I'll still use my PP Lux for the time being.

If I was new to this, and had to chose between the L2D CE and PP Lux I'd probably get the Fenix, so I'm not trashing them.

I am not what you would call an early adopter.

Hey, me too!

I sometimes also carry legoed SF KL4 head or a 9P or a Fenix P1CD or HDS when taking out the trash also. Or any light that is new and I want to test out. But the TL3 is most common.

When I travel, the A2 goes on my nightstand at the hotel. If Im around town at night I always have an ArcP and usually something like a TW4, P1CD or HDS in my pocket as well.
