The tightest throwing lights I have (mostly!) have big reflectors. Like about 3" or so.
A big loopy filament (Dorcy Tool Light bulb for example) can NOT make a tight beam.
I haven't had the chance yet to try a vertical filament halogen in a stock reflector. But the 8 degree 20W MR16 I have with a Vertical Filament and faceted reflector (and horribly overdriven!) makes a VERY VERY bright beam that is a basically a flood with throw!
These are all examples, and GENERALIZATIONS!
