What should I do with my MAG 2D?

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

I had a 6AA ROP a year ago but i wouldn't bother building another now.
it costs alot to build correctly, it's not particularly bright esp compared to big die LEDs and it has crappy runtime esp for the larger size.
It is brightest the first 5 mins you use it then it dims alot.
imo a waste of money now.

Ahhh, I see.

You were not even able to match a P7 with your own example, therefore you bag the whole concept.

I get it now.

I have 4 of the Mag 2D Flashlights - each one is a RoP now.

Cost:
Pair of bulbs - $8
Aluminium Reflector - $15
Glass Lens - $6.25

Then you just need the right batteries and charger. The option I went with would cost $46.02 total (free shipping) but may not work on the high output bulb (works fine on the low bulb). These work good with the high bulb. There are cheaper options as well.

The high output bulb will easily beat the quad die LEDs for output and either bulb will beat any LED for CRI.

With a 2D you have a bigger light that can hold bigger batteries with more capacity - ideal for an incandescent. If you want an LED you can get a good one in a much smaller light.

There are plenty of threads on how to convert a 2D mag into a 6AA ROP complete with sources for parts.
There are a lot less info on how to build a big die LED torch. 3D yes, 2D no.
outersquare, can you provide a link for GunAround on instructions on how to convert a 2D Mag into a big die torch. Complete with sources of parts.

GunAround:
Due to less interest in the ROP nowadays, it is harder to get parts. So do not start until you know you can get everything.

For LED drop-ins.
Mag LED upgrade kit for 2 cell flashlight. Available where Maglites are sold.
Terralux TLE-6EXB. Available at LED-replacement or Battery Junction.
Both the above drop-ins will drop to half brightness in ~10 minutes.

Malkoff Drop-In Module for the Maglite® 2-3 D Size Flashlight. This one should stay at full brightness for extended periods. You will have to cut off the cam off your reflector.

Now for the big die drop in.
Malkoff D Size P7 Drop-In Module for Maglite® flashlights.
You will need Mag 2D, 3C to 18650 Adapter Kit, 2 AW 18650 protected batteries and charger. An orange peel reflector is recommended for the smoothest beam. (I ended up buying one for my Elektrolumens 3C P7 mag)
At this price and complexity point it might be better to buy a new light.

If outersquare cannot find a 2D mod but a 3D one you can convert your 2D into a 2D head 3C cell body with the 2D>3C>2*18650 kit above or make your own with a piece of 1/2" plastic electrical conduit.

Hide your new surefire in it so your wife doesn't find it and yell at you for buying it.

I have a 5-D, and decided the best thing was just put a xenon bulb in it -- which works rather well -- and keep it until a really good drop-in becomes cheap and easy to get. (I'm not about to give Walmart $18 for a mag LED when I can buy a better whole light for that). The time will come...

Very Easy: Get a Malkoff drop in.

Not too hard: Build a ROP.

Somewhat harder: Build a Mag61 or stuff a boost converter and a Cree XP-G LED in.

Insane (but not really that much harder than the Mag61): 100W Mag623 with a 15.6V pack. 5000+ lumens for a couple minutes. :grin2: No LED can touch this.

With the more recent crop of high output LED dropins, I have to agree that the ROP has lost much of it's appeal as of late, unless you happen to have an incan fetish.

I say give that 2D to a friend in need.
Then buy a 6D and make a big ROP!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Your current 5D needs a Malkoff and nothing more.

Incans do have better color rendering. Also, I think that part of the appeal is the fact that an ROP will appear to an unsuspecting citizen to be a fairly normal maglite, until they turn it on. An LED mod will look very different since it has no "normal" bulb, so people are more apt to suspect that it is not a normal maglite, and you don't get the same kind of "surprise" factor.
