Hi everyone,

I have seen pictures many of you have made to render designs of flashlights and other related things. I am going to make some lights from scratch so I thought I would draw up a few things first.

What are the programs that are most commonly used to do these? I would prefer one that has the option for color if possible. Free would be nice too, but also not a requirement.:tinfoil:

The easier it is to use the better as I have no formal education in graphic design.

Google sketchup seems to be a favorite, but if you have access to it, Solidworks is awesome. Never used Pro-E, but I hear it is great too.
 
Solidworks and ProE are probably the most used commercial products but they are not cheap. I used Solidworks at school and at my first job now I use ProE.
 
I am using viacad and demoing geomagic design(alibre design before 3d systems bought them) both are around 200 and have full functioning trials. For a grand, try Rhino

Sketchup is stupid simple and free. I have and use AudoCAD mechanical and when I just need to make something relatively simple and quick, I do it in Sketchup.
 
I'm very fluent in Solidwork's and use it regularly. Sketchup is good but if you're looking for a great renders, Solidworks is the way to go. It's got a bigger learning curve but the results speak for themselves...

Ok, I went ahead and downloaded sketchup. The solid works stuff looks incredible, but I think for now I start with the easier stuff.

Sadly I the tutorials wont work so I am off to a slow start even with that.


One other question. What do you guys use most often to draw "schematic" type images. I would like to do a mock up of a design including measurements in thousandths of an inch.
 
I use SketchUp. I find the best way to learn how to use it is to Google exactly what you want to do! "SketchUp make a cylinder" etc and basically go step by step until done. I got decent results in a day.

As for schematics - I use micro$oft Visio because its easy to use and is easily configurable. Also useful for a whole bunch if stuff :)
