i pointed a 100>mW laser at a UFO?
ok.. some of you may be thinking that im nuts and you dont believe in UFO's but ive seen strange things before ( Like a glowing ball in the sky ) and i know there are things out there other than man made craft, so i was thinking.. what would happen if by some chance we seen some strange ball of light hovering in the sky.. and we pointed the laser at it? i cant say anyone has thought of this or tried it before as you cant just stand outside and wait for some ufo to pass by.

What if what you are seeing is some sort of terrestrial aircraft? Mightn't it be a little dangerous in that case?
The laser scanner idea isn't so farfetched by the way - I've seen this happen at the dark-sky site where I use my telescope - not quite what you described, but unusual nonetheless. There's a casino 10-15 miles away, and when they do a laser show to attract customers, we can sometimes see it from the site. It's *really* annoying! The area where I observe is definitely not "the rich part of the state."
If what you are observing is a natural phenomenon, then the laser will likely have little to no effect.
The probability that it's a craft from another star is exceedingly low, you realize this, don't you? If there's other intelligent life out there, within a detectable proximity of us in space / time, we ought to be able to detect them. Indeed, if a species got even a million year head start on us on another world, they should have been able to colonize the galaxy by this point. We'd possibly even see evidence of their engineering, even with the limited means we have today. Given that you are postulating that they spend extravagant amounts of energy to get here, one could surmise that their other works might not be subtle. So where are they?
But if you are seeing aliens, can you imagine what advanced flashlights or lasers they have! (Obligatory flashlight related comment to reduce probability of this post being edited by a moderator - not that it doesn't deserve it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
I'm not saying you are imagining all this - just that the probability that it's an alien craft seems quite low. It's useful to be skeptical by the way - it's actually pretty hard to ID everything you see in the night sky sometimes, and if you really WANT to see something, then it's very easy to fool yourself into believing you've seen it. I've done it before, and I know better.
