What's with the cree xp-e?

I noticed its in some of the eagletac lights. I know its 80% smaller but why do they use it over the xr-e? Is it any better?
 
In reflectors not specifically designed for the XR-E, the metal ring that spaces the glass lens on the LED creates circular artifacts that appear as rings around the hotspot that the reflector throws forward. This is because the lens/ring system on the XR-E was designed to maximize lumens out the front of the LED.

The XP-E has a different dome on it, allowing for a more typical radiation pattern akin to that of the luxeon power emitters, seoul semi emitters, etc.

So before, you had lambertian emitters (luxeon 1,3,5, k2, etc., seoul semiconductor p4, p7, countless generics, etc.) and then special ones like side-emitting, batwing, and the forward-focusing of the XR-E. XP-E is just a different package, and allows for more applications without finding specialized optics.
 
And it is much cheaper for Cree to make the XP-E versus the XR-E.

True. While the XR-E has a complex structure of ceramic substrate, metal traces, SiC diode, LED diode, metal ring, silicon gel, and glass lens, the XP-E is a simple chip-on-board assembly potted in silicon that is shaped like a lens.
 
Doubt it. They'd probably be about the same. XP-E has the luxury of a silicon lens that isn't as easy to knock off. XR-E may have better overdrive properties, but I'm just speculating, and I don't think it would be THAT much better. Only reason I speculate that is because of that big ol' SiC diode/heatspreader that the LED sits on top of
