Where have all the Petzls gone?

OK, this may be a purely Canadian phenom, but for months now Petzl headlamps have pretty much vanished from the shelves and websites of the usual Canuck vendors, and a company that just last year dominated the northern headlamp market is now very hard to find anywhere. Does anyone know why this has happened, and continues to happen?

Personally, despite being a user I tend to dislike the company due to their studious lack of customer support, so my feelings are very mixed.

Hmmm... my fellow Canadian Michman, you seem to be right- and what with the MEC's soviet-style supply system, esp to its smaller stores, it means almost nothing if something like Petzl isn't seen for a year or so in my local one. But also I never looked to Petzl for the tiny one-unit version headlamps; rather, for their larger units with big long lived battery boxes- and belt packs for winter use. If they are now solely into micro units they've abandoned their area of expertise, IMO.

LLlbean has Petzel backorder also until December 9. The customer warranty is 100% no matter what or how long. Mec suppose to have similar warranty but has yet to prove itself over some years like LLBean and free shipping to Canada all year long.

Check them out they may have what you want.

Hope that help you

Have you looked at the various models in the Ultra series ($400+) or MYO ($80+)? You might also be interested in the Pixa series, but I think that that might be harder to find. Likely you will need to order it online.

LL Bean has had that warranty for almost 100 years now. There customer service has always been great. Although I hardly ever order something from them because it's easier for me to just stop in and pick stuff up (I only live 30 min from their flagship store.) It might also be good to note that there own brand of flashlights are rebranded Princeton-Tec headlamps.I tend to prefer those to Petzls.

Having sassed the MEC in my earlier post, I can defend them here. Their 'ironclad' guarantee is absolutely and 100% good- they've treated me well on defective or early wear-out product issues even when that might well have been considered unreasonable.

LL Bean earned my ire over close to 30 years of refusing to send me a catalogue here in Canada. Petzl has ignored any issues I contacted them about, so I highly recommend only buying their products at a store like the MEC or LL Bean.

An Ultra would be very nice but who wants to pay that esp. for a unit that only uses its own rechargeable battery packs?

I own no fewer than 2 Myos and those are the types (class?) of Petzls I no longer see on the shelves

Mr Bigglow,

I am just trying to help. I have no problem with MEC and I did not put them down. They are suppose to have a similar warranty has LLBean and only time will tell if it will be has good and has long. That's all I was saying.

Good luck in finding what you looking for.

Whoops Scotch, I think you mistook my meaning. In my previous post, I was referring to MY having put the MEC down, in my reference to their Soviet-style supply system- I am of an age and background to remember the Soviet Union and panics when things like toilet paper showed up on Moscow store shelves, after lengthy absences. The MEC is mildly leftwing in their co-operative outlook and although it works well for their members in general it does bring out little weaknesses in things like central planning and supply. BTW, I know they're new to Americans but to Canadians the MEC is 30 years old, which has given them time to establish a solid record, good and bad.
