Where to buy affordable, decent quality LEDs?

Hi all,

I'd like to replace my reading lamp incandescent with a LED bulb. Being an electronics guy, I'd like to build it myself. I have all the parts, except the LEDs.

Can someone please recommend some white LEDs that are affordable (under $15 for 600-800 lumens) and decent quality (limited fading, pure white color, etc). And can you please direct me to where I can buy them.

I really appreciate any help.
Kevin

If you want it for reading, I've noticed neutral LED's are easier on the eyes.

I have a group buy going in the marketplace for some High-CRI SSC emitters, or there are several options available from cutter or mouser.

Sure, if you can tell me where I can get gas for $1.60 a gallon :green:

Right now, plan on spending about $6.00-7.50 per `100-120 lumens for good, state of the art neutral white star mounted LEDs.

If you have re-flow solder gear and willing to mess with bare Rebels then that's a cheaper option.

Neutral white Cree XP-Gs wil have a better cost-per-lumen, especially when driven hard, but they haven't hit the street yet.

You can get 400 Lumen neutral white Bridgelux LEDs for $18.00 at Newark. I have a couple of these and one of them will easily work as a potent reading light.

:-( Thats going to be a budget problem. It'll take all the fun out of my project, and all the pennies from my piggy bank.

LEDninja - Thanks for the links, I'll give them a try.

Thanks,
Kevin

The problem with MC-Es I found is they are more expensive per lumen than Bridgelux when it comes to neutral-white / warm-white. Plus, when you order a 4100k Bridgelux you get a 4100k Bridgelux. You don't need a research grant to reverse engineer the bin tint to actual color temp, then hope it's actually what you get.

A dead neutral, 400 lumen 4100k Bridgelux costs $18.00. Bolt/Glue it to a big heatink, and plug it into the 4-pin molex inside your desktop computer. Use a 2-3 8ohm, 20watt resistors from Rad shak in parallel, and you have your light. If you want it more diffused just glue a chunk of diffusion acrylic under it.
