This construction sounds like a "heavy duty" zinc cloride. Ray-O-Vac says their A1604 is alkaline. Could this be a imitation. (Why would anyone imitate Ray-O-Vac?) Their D1604 is the "heavy duty".

Your main problem may be Ray-O-Vac does
not make a AAAA! Look for other brands. They are plentiful here in the St Louis MO metro area.

When I pulled the two Ray-O-Vac's apart, they were both alkaline, about the same age, and looked identical, package-wise. The difference was the country of origin. This was the first alkaline I'd seen as a wafer cell. They aren't like the old style still used in cheap 9V zinc-carbon waxed stacks, tho, they're a clear plastic molded thing that looks like it interlocks together and is ultrasonically welded or glued. I didn't break it apart, but it looked feasable. Definitely performed like an alkaline. These were the 'industrial' branded units. Good quality batteries in our experience. I think one was USA and the other Canada? With the stacked one the US model. Fuzzy memory. Have to look again, tho I think we're currently sitting on Duracells. (Procell)
As an interesting quality note: The Eveready alk has the 'foil' rectangles on the end caps and depends on the crimp for all cell connections. The Rayovac AAAA-style had welded straps on all but the neg contact on the top, which was a curved pressure finger. The Duracells have all welds. Take a dura apart, slit the outer wrap, grab the top and shake, and you get a string of 'sausages'. Easy to build small one-shot custom battery packs. I didn't have room for a 9v pack once, but by stacking it 4X and 2X, was able to wedge it in. Worked for years..
