where to get AAAAs?

What's a reasonable source for AAAAs? I tried the 9V battery "trick" and didn't find any AAAAs (it was a rayovac and am i missing something or was that a joke..).
 
Havent tried taking apart 9v's personally, but it seems legit that there are AAAA's in there. Maybe try another brand?
 
On the batteries taken from a 9v battery, be careful of the polarity and be aware of the fact that they are shorter than a store bought AAAA battery.

Radio shack is a common source of AAAA batteries. Might search the net also.
 
I ripped apart a 9V Rayovac Maximum today and it had 6 horizontal layers, rather than 6 AAAA's.
 
I don't know if all Walgreens carry them, but the ones here does.

I discovered that the Ray-o-Vacs were manufactured in two different countries, one of which used cylindrical cells aka AAAA, and one that used wafer cells. It's been a year or so since I cracked any Eveready or Duracells, but both of them had the AAAA shaped cells. Eveready just crimped with no intercell connections, and Duracell with tiny welded straps between the cells. I've had better luck with the Duracells, myself.. And if you ever drop an Eveready, it may very well go intermittent due to the lack of solid connections. So chop it up for AAAAs..

For what it'd cost you to get a couple 'official' AAAA cells, tho, it's worth a stab trying a Duracell.. And they tend to be freasher due to the turnover..

AAAA from 9V packs is legit. As you found though, not all 9V carries it. I only tried Duracell and Energizer, the regular alkaline stuff, not the M3 or titanium. I know that my local hardware shop does sell the Energizer titanium AAAA.

This construction sounds like a "heavy duty" zinc cloride. Ray-O-Vac says their A1604 is alkaline. Could this be a imitation. (Why would anyone imitate Ray-O-Vac?) Their D1604 is the "heavy duty".

Your main problem may be Ray-O-Vac does not make a AAAA! Look for other brands. They are plentiful here in the St Louis MO metro area.

Little OT, but anyone try using those Ray-O-Vac waffer cells?? Im sure you can make a pretty flat single LED light driven by two of those waffers.

When I pulled the two Ray-O-Vac's apart, they were both alkaline, about the same age, and looked identical, package-wise. The difference was the country of origin. This was the first alkaline I'd seen as a wafer cell. They aren't like the old style still used in cheap 9V zinc-carbon waxed stacks, tho, they're a clear plastic molded thing that looks like it interlocks together and is ultrasonically welded or glued. I didn't break it apart, but it looked feasable. Definitely performed like an alkaline. These were the 'industrial' branded units. Good quality batteries in our experience. I think one was USA and the other Canada? With the stacked one the US model. Fuzzy memory. Have to look again, tho I think we're currently sitting on Duracells. (Procell)

As an interesting quality note: The Eveready alk has the 'foil' rectangles on the end caps and depends on the crimp for all cell connections. The Rayovac AAAA-style had welded straps on all but the neg contact on the top, which was a curved pressure finger. The Duracells have all welds. Take a dura apart, slit the outer wrap, grab the top and shake, and you get a string of 'sausages'. Easy to build small one-shot custom battery packs. I didn't have room for a 9v pack once, but by stacking it 4X and 2X, was able to wedge it in. Worked for years..

I can confirm that standard Energizer alkaline 9V batts have AAAAs in them, as well as Energizer Industrial Alkalines. Both have identical internal construction, having "loose" cells relying on pressure-fit for all electrical connections. I have taken apart close to 50 now, to get at the tops--they make good 9V battery clips, or better yet, cliplites!

Duracell and Duracell ProCell alkalines are AAAA, but with welded and crimped connections. I took apart a Varta 9V Alkaline battery once that had flat cells similar to the ones described in the Ray-o-Vac above. Panasonic 9V batteries use welded and crimped connections like the Duracells, but without the outer shrinkwrap.

As for polarity, remember that the can on an alkaline cell is positive, and the seal is at the negative end--so the stud protruding from the AAAA cells from a 9V are negative, and the flat end is positive. Lithium and Ni-Cd/Ni-MH cells are the other way around (negative can, positive crimp/seal end).
 
The Rayovac Maximum is an alkaline battery. It was very nicely constructed by the way. I'm sure it's a better 9V than the ones that contain 6 AAAA's, and it might have significantly more capacity than they do. So if you want a good 9V, I'd suggest the Rayovac Maximum. It was designed from the ground up as a 9V.

It's just like the one in the pdf link.

Except, in my case, it's the Duracell 9V's. They have similar 6 AAAA's in them. I, too have made some cliplites. Neat projects!
I used the tops of dead Duracell 9V's and found the 6 AAAA's in each of them, except that they're tack-welded. And the metal can is a pain to disassemble.

I have worked out a method for removing the metal shell on 9V batts. Prying up at one end of the lengthwise crimp will facilitate the separation of that crimp. It's going to be one side or the other, it varies depending on the brand of battery--but it should be consistent within a given brand. For instance, on an Energizer 9V battery, with the terminals facing up and the positive on the left, the crimp is on the right side of the battery. Prying up on the front-half of the crimp will separate it.
 
thanks for the replies. Will still have to try to tear open a different brand 9V but nice job with the links too folks. Gotta feed that streamlight stylus my wife gave me for christmas somehow!

You are going to find that your new best friend has a very small appetite. I wouldn't really go stocking up on batteries for it. AAAAs are getting more available all the time. I've seen them in drugstores lately and Radio Shack has had them for the last couple of years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
