Could anyone tell me where I could buy ICs from? In particular, I'm currently looking at Maxim parts right now.

I've been looking at Maxim's website, and I can't tell if they do direct sales for their parts in small quantities.

They have free samples, so you can test your idea before ordering lots of ICs.
Keep in mind though, that the samples do not work as well as the ones you buy(a MAX727 that should supply 2A supplies only 1.2A without getting too hot).

Maxim and Dallas Semiconductor have Merged together, and they have a GREAT sample program up to 2 parts per item (I have pushed it to 4 - if you talk nice to them)

Make sure you order your samples in the package you desire, unless you are very good at soldering tiny packages

Star, you've been corrected on this before, please stop spreading this lie.

Lucien, the free samples are the exact same devices sold wholesale or retail.

I have a solid supply of Maxim components and several sources if you need help with them.
