I am thinking about a general purpose headlamp that can also be used for map reading.
Is there a "Surefire" of headlamp makers. If there are one or two "quality leaders" in the headlamp making business I would like to start my education with a look at their web sites.

Princeton Tec and Zebralight are the first two companies that come to my mind when I think general use headlamps.

"Surefire of headlights," to me, means Stenlight, Speleo Technics Nova 3, or possibly the "new guys," FoxFury.

Petzl http://en.petzl.com/petzl/LampesAccueil has always struck me as having a good price to quality vs. intended use equation, meaning the quality rise is commensurate to the seriousness of the activity and the price rise seems justified and reasonable. Surefire quality, where everything is M1 tank engineered … probably not, but none of the 4 headlamps I have owned from them has ever failed me, my oldest light being some 15+ years old. Plus they have a little something for everyone and some nice features, such as the diffuser, that allow a single light to serve well in multiple roles.

PS. For what it's worth, Princeton Tec, Petzl, and Streamlight occupy most of the top spots (4+ rating) on Flashlight Review's ratings http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews_index/reviews_index_headlamps.htm, at least for headlamps under $100. Click the RATING collumn to sort & resort the rankings.

I would either go for something that has 5mm's or the Zebralight for map reading. They give a even flood of light instead of a spot. I have a Black Diamond SPOT which has as luxeon converted to SSC P4, and 3 5mm's which have been sanded to create a more smooth flood. I use the 5mm's when I read at night.
