MM+ WO with 1W LD Q3K or MM+ WO with 3W HD TX1K? It will be run with 1XAA in a miniminimag. Anyone with both to compare? Thanks.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong in any of this.

A single AA nmh will only output 400 milliamps max to lux. According to specs MM+ WO is designed to output 700 milliamps to lux.

I do have a MM+WO TWAK sammie, but not the other. Very efficient circuit, will drive lux down to 1.1volts, but is very dim. I also have a BB500 R2H, will not even light up at 1.1 volts.

I also have a MM+ WO R2H, it lights up the best at 1.1volts and at 1.5 volts puts out decent brightness. But no where near output at 3 volts. The MM+ WO R2H is my brightest sammie W/single 123. The MM+ WO TWAK is close and runs much cooler. The R2H sammie in firefly came on in my pocket while asleep. I ended up with a dime sized blister.

What you want is a MM+ R2H sammie. MM lite R2H would be killer as well. Good luck finding one!! they do come up.
 
If you plan to be running 1xAA, perhaps you could look at the MJ (ArcMania) convertor.

With the MM board or MJ for that matter, you will want a diode with a Vf closest to 3v (H-binned, ideally).You could use a Luxeon III only if you want a whiter light with less tint.
 
If you're set on running the 1xAA configuration, I would not use the MM+. I would go with the MM or MM lite, and my choice would be the lite. In this case I would be more choosey about the vF of the Luxeon than anything else. I wouldn't use a K - you really want a H, at the worst a J. With a AA it's too underpowered to expect much, so I wouldn't put a whole lot into it. For just about the same size, you can have a CR123 powered light that will out perform the 1xAA many times over.
 
I use the R2H MM+ WO, with my mmm, and it is bright. Not sure about Lite.

That's because it's an R2H. Much brighter than the Q and comparable to the T, but at the a lower vF than the Luxs he listed.

I've gone ahead and built both modules. There is something wrong with the MM+WO with Q3K, it keeps flickering. For the MM+WO with TX1K, the LED is very dim when 1XAA battery is used. The current drawn on the AA battery is only 130mA. When used with 2XAA batteries, the 3W module is very bright. Hopefully, the MM or MM lite will give better result with 1XAA configuration.
Another question, should I be using a 3Watter or 1watter in order to have a brighter light?
 
I have a TV1J on a MM WO and it is perfect with a 2xAA config, but dimmer with a 1xAA. I don't think that 1xAA can keep up with the power demands, especially when your Vin is 1.5v regulated up to 3v. Again, if you manage the Vf of the diode (the perfect Luxeon for 1xAA is the R2H/R3H as mentioned above). The TX1K is being under driven, with its higher Vf and the current constraints of a 1xAA config.

As long as you drive the 3W at 1W specs, it will ideally perform very much like a 1W (keeping in mind that most Luxeon III's will have a slightly higher Vf). So if you want a 1xAA light, it would be better to stick with the R2H/R3H 1W Luxeons (I have not yet come across an H-binned Luxeon III).
