So I'm out walking in the woods yesterday evening with the dog, its absolutely pitch black and I'm probably the only one there, who else would be dumb enought to be out after dark! After a couple of hours I see the flicker of a light way off in the distance and about 1 mile further on a meet another couple of dog walkers.
About two hundred meters further down the parth, and in the pitch black I here a noise up along the path, I switch the light from flood to throw and light up a another guy walking his dog, its pitch black and he has no light.
When I get up next to him he says, "wow, you really scared me with the light"

I think to myself "wow, you really scared me appearing from nowwhere in the pitch black"

So who is the scarier guy, the one who you can see coming for a mile off or the one who appears from nowwhere!

happened to me some nights ago; was walking through a dark residential area, really dark, didn't really see the real need to switch my light on,.........until out of nowhere,..i heard a dog growling at me, from somewhere behind me. straight away I switched it on, on boost, looked round,..and it was someone walking their dog,..out of nowhere they appeared. I think the person walking the dog realised my flashlight also had a growl too. lol.
scary though,..I was getting ready to run and jump on a car!.

The guy out in the dark was probably up to no good or less than good and expected to see no one. Then you with a bright light looked like you were the fuzz coming to bust him. Scary !
 
I don't think either would count as "scary".

Obviously, he didn't appear out of thin air, you just had not noticed him. A tree in the forest along the path is not appearing out of nowhere either...you are just going from not noticing it, to noticing it.

You may need to relax a bit to enjoy your walks.

ME

I once was headed to my local field for some flashlight fun and had only my E01 in hand for the part where the road is right behind people's backyards. Then I heard something running AT me. Something BIG. I though it could be an angry rottweiller. I turned my E01 on just in time to advert a runner from slamming into me. He then turned on his light (which was a tad brighter than mine) and kept running off. I don't know how he could run in total darkness on such terrain: mud holes, gravel piles and rocks all over.
