Wikipedia Lipo article incorrect information?

takes you to:

so...does sanyo make these claimed lipo batteries? i know about the nimh eneloops, but lipo?

edit: i thought it could been an erroneous entry by someone who mistaked NIMH for lipo.


i searched google after, and it seems many websites are quoting this as well. spread of mis-info?

I would not be surprised if Sanyo has continued to do considerable work on lithium polymer battery development. But, of course, Sanyo doesn't really exist anymore... So, it is hard to say who currently owns that technology and/or manufacturing facility. Likely to be Panasonic, but no easy way to be certain.

What seems wonky here? That Sanyo claims 500 cycles on "lipo" batteries, or that Sanyo MAKES lipo batteries?

Regarding the 500 cycles, that is not a high number for a Li-ion battery life, and if it was, it would only be abnormally high for a plain old-style LiCo/LiMn cell. The newer chemistries fix that, particularly the nickel cathode varieties. My laptop has a lipo pack rated for 1000 cycles (minimum, to 80% capacity remaining, I believe) and it has 942 on it right now with 85% of original capacity remaining. It is marked 10.95V nominal, so whatever it is, it's not ordinary LiCo. Probably NMC.

Moral of the story, "lipo" is not a chemistry, it is a method of packaging a cell. You can make "lipo" cells from LiCo, NMC, NCA, LiFePO4... the cobalt types tend to get identified as "lipo" most often and this is the source of much confusion.

Now as to Sanyo... yes this company has been absorbed by Pana, but there are still Panasonic products, and then there are Sanyo products, and if you have ever held cells from each in your hands, you know that they are WAY different sets of technologies and production lines. Note the CG.../NC... series which are Panasonic (like the NCR18650B and CGR18650CH we know and love) and the U... series which are Sanyo, like our UR18650F/FM.

It is easy to find a Sanyo pouch (lipo) cell with 500 cycle rating:

So yes, Sanyo makes/made lipos, and they lived 500 cycles.
 
ah ok. thanks for info

i thought that the 500 cycles claim was for the NIMH and someone mistakenly added it into the wikipedia page for LiPo's.
