Will I get through airport security with this?

Thanks for sharing your experience. Would you care to share the conversation you had with them regarding the vials? Or did they not see them?

He asked what they were...
I explained they glow in the dark and are used as indicators or markers to find objects in the dark.
I told him to cup his hands around the case to see them glow and showed him the Trit vial in the EX10 I had with me.
I also had my Surefire Tritium torch with me.
He started to open it and I asked him to be careful because the sphere might fall out and break and it cost $55.00.
He looked at me strange but screwed it back together and put it back.

I remember a few years ago I had a nightmare after reading all those posts about primary lithiums blowing up. I had a dream that a TSA guy asked if he could turn on the Pelican light to make sure it was a flashlight. Then the light started to sizzle and the cap blew off venting with flame. I know it was a stupid dream, but everytime I go through security, I think about it. I couldn't imagine the trouble you'd be in if that really happened. :ooo:

It might sound crazy, but ever since then, I make sure that I have good quality new batteries in any light going through security :thinking:

Throw it in the change tray and not even think. When in doubt leave it at home. If I lose the SF or HDS it's replaceable, customs aren't as easily a swallow.

Are you really going to let some dimwitted dingleberry with "TSA" on their uniform - and who might better be suited for running the cash register at The Gap - decide of you are going to lose a spendy light? I don't think so! Leave that thing at home. :)

Leave that thing at home. Its a way nice light, wouldn't want to lose it or miss your flight. I want one btw.

Me thinks you guys don't fly alot. I was gone about 30 days last year for work plus personal trips and took lights every time. I even took a couple of surefires to Ireland last year.

My suggestion is just toss it in your carry on as you go through security. You can't have it in your pocket while going through the metal detectory anyway. THat way TSA never sees the light.
The radiation symbol is no big deal. How many clothes and knick nacks does it appear on nowdays? It won't be seen on an Xray. It would have to be flat to the detector, and if it was that way the barrel of the light would be blocking it anyway.
The tritium is no biggie either my watch has more trit that that light and I have never had a problem. I think you will be fine if you stay CONUS for vacation. Now international could be weirder with radiation.

Well, here's what happened: At Midway airport in Chicago, I threw the light in the tray along with my watch, sunglasses and wedding band. The security officer glanced in the tray and slid it right back to me. Not even a second look. At Orlando International airport, I put it in the tray, but this time only with my watch (I left my ring on, and my sunglasses were in my bag). I purposely leaned the light against the watch so the clip would face straight up. The movement of the tray caused the light to roll with the clip on the side again. The officer took a quick look at the tray and slid it to me. No one even looked at the light. Actually, I was a little disappointed as I'd hoped for a little conversation about it. So, it's pretty obvious that lights with tritium vials aren't something the airports are looking for. The funny thing is that on the plane coming back home, I went in my carry-on to get my iPod and found 2 BIC lighters in there that I forgot to throw in my checked bag. They easily got through security, even though they are clearly prohibited...

DUQ: My back is fine. My knee is the problem, and always will be. I've been off work since Feb 4, 2008 and will not be going back. After surgery and 11 months of therapy, it's worse than it was before the surgery. Nothing they can/will do about it. Thanks for the concern!

I normally travel with a pair of SF G2's and have not had any issues with TSA. They get more concerned with crenelated bezels than the light itself.


BTW, where do you get a light like that? Uber cool looking piece...

My last flight they didn't even notice the leatherman skeletool that I forgot to remove from my carry on luggage. Just throw it in your bag and you should be fine.

My watch dial has 16 tritium vials on it and no one ever even notices it.
