Need a good compact windup light for situations when im hiking with minimal stuff. Just as a back up in case my other lights let me down.

What about this?

All i can find is cheap gimmick stuff. Any Aussies know if Places Aussie Disposals or Anacondas Sell good ones? Preferably small & compact.

any advice? thanks.

I think a squuezy trigger would be much easier to use than a wind up handle. For Xmas, someone happened to buy me (honest, wasn't me) an ultra cute penguin torch that you squeeze to operate. Surprised by how good it is and how much light you get per squeeze time actually. Bit heavy though, if only I could bring myself to chop his feet off for lightweight backpacking.

I have a Freeplay, different model though, I think they are the best quality wind up I have handled. They are well made and should last a long time, till the batteries inside give out anyway.

I also have one of the radios they make, just as good!

Hope this helps :)

edit: just a quick thought, you know they are not as bright as what you seem used too :P

What kind of cells do these Freeplay lights have in them... NiMh? I wonder if they can be taken out for periodic maintenance?
