Hey,

I heard this hoax long back and even gave a try. I tried this on two Sony Handycams. Frankly its nothing, if you see in day light everything is overexposed... that may be giving such effect. Its more of halucination that anything else.

I have an IR-sensitive camera (CCD w/o the IR filter) and I tried this experiment and could not duplicate it. I suspect that this effect is at least partly an illusion.

Nope, it is not a hoax... See the above information. It is a real effect that some dark/black dyes can be transparent in near IR.

The limit of the "x-ray" effect is a question of how easy it is to see through the fabric itself. If it is thin nylon (like some camping gear or cloths) the effect is like looking through un-dyed (i.e. white) fabric.

Sony has modified their cameras such that they overexpose in broad daylight when the "feature" was discovered. There are companies that will modify some cameras back--or IR filters can be used to cut the over exposure and enhance the IR effect.

Play with the camera in a dark room and look at different items (with nighshot and IR LEDs turned on)... It seems that synthetic fabrics and dyes are the most changed when viewed under near IR light.

I didn't realise IR Pass Filters were such big news. They've been in use in photography for some number of years now *shrug*. In fact, I'm planning on purchasing one for use with my Olympus C-8080. They're highly useful for cutting through thick haze or fog in B/W photography (which is my favourite).

I never tried those specs. I was under the impression that they were hoaxes designed to freak out passers by why thought they were being spied upon.

Other thoughts:

If they could put IR filters on a mobile phone, maybe 3G would finally catch on.

If laid off, I'd like to put an IR filter on our video conferencing camera before the annual results media presentation. I can imagine a small child asking innocently "Why is the emperor wearing no clothes?" or more likely a reporter asking "Why is the Chairman wearing a ladies' bra?"

Maybe you can "see through" some thin fabrics with near IR, but for the real thing, you have to go to passive millimeter wave imaging.
