I was just reading about the surefire beast, and some ppl mentioned the x990. Does anyone have any pics of the light as well as the beam? Or has there already been a post of this, it would be great if you could let me know. Thanks!

Search for "X990", you'll find quite a bit.

The light output and throw of the X990 and Beast are comparable. The beast will drive you into the poor house feeding it C123's - it's a hungry devil. Of course if you can afford a Beast, you probably aren't too worried about the poor house (read Uncle Sam).

You can throw both lights 30 feet in the air and land in the middle of the street.

However the Beast will still be working (I've seen it done), and the X990 will be in a cazillion pieces.

From everything i've read, the x990 is a very good light if u want one. I personally have never used it, but (I think its Nikola Tesla) has one and seems very very happy with it. The only downsides i can see is its slight lack of durability. Oh ya, it's VERY bright for its price. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif

WARNING: I've purchased an X990 from Proxenon last year and both batteries failed after a short time. When I contacted Proxenon about the problem, they just ignored my mails. I was *very* polite, it just seems to be their method of handling problems. After 3 or 4 unanswered mails I gave up. Conclusion: Buy from Brightguy, Greg is a nice person and I have no doubt that he will be helpful if there is a problem. Note: I've fixed the problem in the meantime, both batteries had bad soldering, so fixing was pretty simple once I opened them, but I voided my warranty by doing so. Well, there wasn't any warranty anyway...

Yeah, I'd suggest you look at brightguy for the X990, I've allways heard good things about their service. It will be close to $500 no matter where you buy it. Take a look at my thread in the group buy section, there is still a remote possibility that I could be getting more of these for around $300.

Mark2,

I had the same exact problem from Proxenon even though they say they've got a 5 year warranty you'd be lucky to get 5 days. At their suggestion I contacted the mfg. and they sent an email that said they were pursuing a lawsuit against Proxenon.

Brightguy is a legit dealer for these lights in the U.S. I've already checked it out. He's backed by the U.S. official distributor.

Good luck.

wow...thats pricy. Thanks for the pics jtice, they were awesome. Im still a university student, and 3 surefires already almost put me into the hole...i think this one will have to wait /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's a good question, who's PK. much chat going around about him/her/it/that. Anyway, srry about the proxenon idea, but there are a couple CPFers on here that have been happy with their purchases there. Battery Charger, possible $300 x990's again!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/huh.gif Keep us informed!!!

C ya,

BakerOnFire90,

You're right about Proxenon. I was one that was pleased with them until I needed support then they became useless; affable but useless.

On a light of this price it's not just the product but the support that you are buying. Most people can't afford to throw away a big pile of money or time trying to rectify a simple warranty return. Of course YMMV but if people don't hear about the dark side then unpleasant surprises can happen.

PK is Paul Kim. I don't remember his exact title but I believe it's something like Lead Design Engineer at Surefire. He's been a real stand up guy here on CPF, donations and tech advice, even though he's super busy. I hope to be able to meet him in person some day.

Good luck,
LT

Greetings,

I would also put my $0.02 for Brightguy. Delivery was right on time, and everything has worked perfectly for several weeks so far. The x990 is my night walking light--perhaps a bit heavy but I want to know if anybody is on that baseball field besides me, or down a dark street. This is a Philadelphia suburb, and supposed to be a safe area, but we all watch TV at 11, so I like to have the security of a long throw lamp.

As far as tossing it into the air, I did not buy it to use in that fashion, so if SF has a model that can withstand such abuse and you need that, good luck. I mentioned on an earlier post that this light has brought out quite a few neighbors, who wonder what the old man is doing walking down the street with a superlight. There is a new model from another company that allows carrying only the head, and wearing the battery pack on a belt, but the concept is the same--plenty of light at your convenience.

Would I buy another x990--positively yes. It does what I need and want. If you just want a super torch, there are mod guys on this site who can outdo it, probably at lower cost. It all depends on your skills and needs.

Best Holiday Wishes to All,

Harvey A. Koolpe

You can do pretty much the same with the X990. There is a 12v adapter available which replaces the heavy battery with a very light cigarette lighter plug. There are many wearable 12v battery packs that this could plug into...I'm thinking of making my own lithium pack like this.

jtice, yeah thanks, i really appreciate it. But i think this x990 is waaay too rich for my blood. I checked out your sites, and i see that you have the THOR 10 million. How is that one? And how does that compare to the x990?
Thanks
