New to the subject but keen to learn, can anyone explain why some xenon flash lights are built as HID with complicated electronics and expensive and some flash lights just have simple xenon bulbs directly connected to batteries? Need to build not expensive flashlight for a specific application. Thank you
 
You are describing two entirely different technologies. In one Xenon is the inert gas that fill the bulb around a tungsten filament. Xenon discourages the vaporization of the tungsten filament, and has no 'active' role in producing light output. The Xenon allows the filament to operate at a slightly higher temperature, resulting in a 'whiter' light, and higher lumens per watt. These are often 3-6 volt flashlight lamps, so will run directly off a modest number of batteries directly connected. In spite of being labeled xenon, they are in fact simply regulare incandescent lamps filled with xenon gas.

The other is a Xenon Arc tube, wihch requires a very voltage to ionize the xenon so it conducts and then a lower (but still pretty high voltage) to operate the arc inside the tube. Most Xenon Flash tubes are designed to be on for 1-2 milliseconds at a time. Duing that time in larger lamps, several hundred joules will be discharged into the arc, resulting in an extremely bright light for the time the arc is burning. Electronics are required to produce the several thousand volts needed to inonize the xenon, and hundreds of volts are required to maintain the arc. If you want to run such a device off small batteries, you are going to need electronics to genrate the ignition voltate, and electronics to generate and store the energy to operate the arc once it is lit,
 
Well, its because the same words are sometimes used interchangeably.

A halogen bulb/xenon bulb uses a filament in a gas (Hence the name)...but doesn't need a ballast, because there's no High Intensity Discharge (HID) to power...essentially just to make the filament glow.

The HID capsules do use a high intensity discharge, and that discharge is providing the light...and a ballast is required to fire it up...but the arc created is providing the light, rather than a glowing filament.

So, HIDs need the ballast to light it up, and the regular xenon bulbs do not...hence the cheaper cost.

Thank you for explaining. Would it mean that not HID xenon flashlight has no emission of ionized xenon and therefore will not have strong near infra-red output? I am building illumination for night vision viewer and need good near IR emission but in compact light frame, this is why I am not so keen on HID.
 
2 years ago I purchased a 50WXenon HID Flashlight torch with 2 6600mAH Batteries for $243. I believe it puts out 4500 lumens and I really like it. I purchased it from China which I don't like but the same thing here in the states was way to expensive. It uses 23,000 volts to excite the Xenon gas which is stepped up from a 12 volt battery. Now the same link takes me to an Ebay link that is selling the same Torch for $1231.00 Figure that one out.
