XM-L P60 drop in question

Hi all. Not sure if this is the correct area to post, but here goes.

I am seeking a P60 XM-L drop in that can run 12V. Is there such a critter available for sale from vendors ?

All I can find in searching is up to 4.2V.

I could be wrong, but haven't seen any drivers capable of handling 12v for the XM-L. 8 volts (2x18650) is a strong combination with good runtime. My understanding is that the driver takes the 8v from the 2x18650 & bucks that down to (about) 3v at the emitter.

Thanks for the response. I am working a LEGO and have a Vital Gear 3 CR123 or 2XAA body. Not sure if pushing the extra volt (9) would kill the 8V Led :thinking: That is running 3X CR123 cells.

The 12V number was thoughts of 3X RCR123

My next option would be 2X AA and could run 14500's or the new toss away 14505's at 3V each.

I guess my goal is/was to drive a XM-L to the limits :naughty:

There is a 9 volt XM-L pill put out by Dereelight but that's the highest voltage I can find. It should work fine with 3 primaries.

It's kind of pricey because you have to add the reflector separately. I know they recommend 2 X 18650 but I see no reason 3 X CR123a won't work since max listed is 9 V but you won't be driving the XM-L to its limits. People have tested them running over 4 amps but after 3 amps you don't really add much output. Tough to get rid of the heat at 4 amps or more.

The Malkoff M91 and M91W take 12v.

The VME Head matches well with the Vital Gear bodies, as well.

EDIT: This post should be in the LED Flashlights forum, unless you're specifically looking for someone to build you a custom 12v P60.

The thrunite only draws 1.5 amps. All of the others mentioned are brighter.
 
There was a post recently that showed a comparison between quite a few XML dropins. The thru-nite held its own despite drawing less power.

I can confirm this with my own experience. Its as bright as I need a p60 sized light to be yet the run times are great. I love the manafont XML but it just burbs through batteries absurdly quick (4+ amperage draw!). Its the law of diminishing returns.

The thru-nite also has a really nice low mode and is great for upclose work. Brightness doesn't always have to be the main factor in a purchase
 
I said the others are brighter not better. This has been confirmed with sphere measurements.

Greetings. I did receive the thru-nite drop in. The output on all cells is extremely bright. The limitation being I can not run 3 X RCR123's.

There is one option if I use the Vital Gear 3 cell body. I can run 2 X RCR123 with a CR123 spacer if I want to go using no primarys . :ironic:

EDIT : Or 2 X 14500's

Or I have a Surefire 2 cell E body in the mix of parts as well. :devil:

To add, indeed the low mode is quite pleasant. I did not expect the low mode to be as useful as it turns out. It's almost a moon light in glow. :naughty:

I just figured you were saying they were better because they were brighter. By saying it only draws 1.5 amps and than concluding with "all the others are brighter" makes one think you're saying it's inferior.

I'm not denying the others are brighter. You don't need an integrating sphere to be able to see that. Measurements don't mean much when real world usability doesn't follow specs linearly. What I mean is, just because the manafont or any other dropin is putting out maybe a couple hundred more lumens, the difference is really not as big as the numbers may be telling you.

I'm glad you like it! I liked mine until I compared it with the solarforce. Since some of you prefer the lower output I think I'll put my thrunite 1.5 amp p60 xm-l in the wtt forum.

As somebody mentioned earlier, get the Malkoff M91. It is brighter and can go up to 12V (6.5 to 12). You can use 3 primary cr123a cells with the M91. You would be hard pressed to find a better drop-in.

Also, yes you can direct drive it. I have an XML light running at 6A (slightly over 1100 OTF lumens).

tre. Is the Malkoff a P60 size drop in ? I have only seen them in a VME head and the lens area is quite limited.

With the direct drive XM-L at 6A what tail switch are you using ? The Vital Gear body I have has a 1.5A rating, but have been advised it can handle up to about 5A before frying.

Sorry, I meant that I have an XML direct driven but it is not a Malkoff or a P60. All I was saying is that you can direct drive an XML and it can take far more amperage than many think.

Oh, and yes, The m91 is P60 compatible in some (but not all) hosts. I have tried them in a Solarforce body and Deerelight body without the VME head. I can't remember which one but I know I had to add some copper tape to one of those so it made better contact with the drop-in. Somebody above said the VME head works on the Vital Gear body too.

There is also this switch which will take 25A.

You can direct drive it but remember the vF is only about 3 volts.
