Hi all,

I have a few XML2's on the way to me at the moment so I will be able to start testing myself shortly, however I was wondering if anyone could provide recommendations for a reflector?

What I'm after is a reflector small enough to fit a P60 shell (diameter less than or equal to 20mm) that gives a medium beam - that means not all throw, but not all flood, with a nice even transition from hot spot to spill.

I have an McR20S reflector that I think might do the trick. It's shallower than the reflectors I've previously been using, but has the same opening diameter, so should provided a larger hot spot. I just can't test it until the emitters arrive.

I'm hoping to get some other suggestions so I can order them to try once the emitters get here. Possibly some beam shots of the McR20S + XML2 would be super handy as well!

No matter what ~ 20 mm reflector you use for the XML2, you don't need to worry about not having a floody beam.

Haha, yeah I know it it will be "floody", I just want a nice even transition from hot spot to spill. Some reflectors I've used in the past the hot spot is big, but the reflector was so deep it had a doughnut effect to it as it transitioned to the spill. I'm trying to avoid that this time. Almost even transition would be perfect. I've seen the McR18 is 2mm shallower, and 2mm narrower. This would give slightly more flood as well, but it depend on how 'focused' the McR20 is I guess.
 
A while back, I had a custom copper heat sink direct drive P60 with a warm XML and with a mcr20 reflector. The beam was flawless. No donut effect in the hotspot either. It also had a good balance with the hotspot to spill to.

That is a very nice transition! The hotspot is a bit tighter than I'd like but it all depends on how far away the subject you're illuminating is. I think I'll wait for the emitters to arrive before deciding if I need to order more reflectors or not because the 20S looks like a winner :)

My dropin from nailbender is as beautiful as a ZebraLight. Beautiful transition, nice balance. It is textured, not smooth of course. You could ask what he uses, I would think.

I am hoping your high amp switch is progressing.

Pretty sure Nailbender uses the McR20 reflector because that's who I got mine from in the first place lol. It was 2+ years ago though so it might be worth checking. The switch is going great at the moment :)

Check out the P60 Drop-In, Empty Orange Peel from Illumination Supply. I've used these in a few drop-in I've put together and been very pleased with the spot, transition and flood. And, they are quite cheap.

Thanks SOYCD. I actually have one at the moment. The problem is I'm trying to build a one-off P60 like my copper shells. The IS module would be good normally, but I'm going super high end here so it won't do this time :(
 
Not yet, though I do have a few on hand to try. Still waiting on the LEDs to arrive. Starting to get worried actually - $80 worth of LEDs is nothing to sniff at personally.

Do they smell bright?
 
Try spending $1500 on trits with you fingers crossed that customs doesn't intervene. Your LEDs smell pretty good. :)

I'll be curious to see how your experiments go on the LEDs/reflectors.

Ha yeah I'll pass lol. I should buy LEDs in bulk more often. I'm forever wondering what would happen if I paired an LED with a particular reflector or drove it is some specific current etc. The problem is I use them, sell them , or break them to quickly. I need a set of "to keep" LEDs!

I'm pretty sold on the McR20. The McR18 seems like a floodier alternative. The only problem with the McR line of reflectors are their dwindling availability, which sucks if you ask me.

The McR20 is substantially smaller (20mm diameter) than those normally used for P60 drop-ins (26mm).
I don't think that its correct that Nailbender would use them for his P60 drop-ins.

Add to that the cost... McR20s about $18.
McR20 has no threads for mating to pill either.

So a costly reflector that would need to be glued to pill and much smaller than bezel diameter.
I'm sure Nailbender does not use them.

Oveready used them in the Z32 XML DD offering, that's a custom head though, not a dropin.

My pills press against the lens so I have problems with the reflector moving during use. It also makes getting to the emitter much easier post installation.

Mattaus - I think your existing reflector is good.
I have one of your dropins (bucket sink with that reflector) and was curious before receiving if I should expect an output "hit"
due to the obvious smaller reflector diameter needed to fit inside the bucket.
Fair comparison would be Malkoff M91. P60 XML dropin. I measure those as 18mm diameter reflector opening, compared to 19mm for your reflector. M91 is floodier but has similar beam characteristics - the typical 3 part XML beam, hot spot, inner spill, obvious transition to outer spill with tint variation. Malkoff states Don McCleish designed reflectors for dropins, I don't know if the M91, using XML is different from XPG dropins, if not Gene considered beam acceptable.

So for me, result is good. More throw than M91 with no more exaggeration of the typical XML beam artifacts.
If I want floodier I prefer a triple dropin over a single XML.

For even more throw I like Cree XML-10R.
At around 29mm diameter a Z32 bezel is required.
Unless you trim some of the top of the reflector flange, it requires fitting reflector then securing lens.
They suit using mule sink and Z32, not your "bucket" sink.

OR state McR20 used.
Regards my point about installing XML-10R through lens opening, OR head can be removed and fitted to different light.
My config requires leaving head permanently screwed down. (benefit MUCH larger reflector)

Z32 has some metal around the shock ring system limiting reflector diameter. A little machining would really help.
