Yet another cheapie mod

Saw a GP 2 x AA light going for $2.50, decided to just buy it for kicks. Came home after work and chucked in 2x14500s and a 6D Maglite bulb.

Nice and bright now! Can't wait to go fishing some night and raise some eyebrows, haha.

Nice... I like cheap mods. I am working on an R2-WC mod with a $19 Husky spot light host. I want to try 2xD 3.7V in a 2D mag with a mag 6D bulb and an OP reflector.

I did one like that using 2x3.7V li-ions and a 5D maglite bulb. Took about 2 minutes to start melting the reflector and 3 minutes to finish melting it. The cost goes up when you try to make one that doesn't melt.

Yeah, you have to find one made of aluminum.

Hey, Hyperloop! I've been reading your posts and am new to this site. I have an idea for a "mod host" --- there's an inexpensive aluminum flashlight out there by the name of GreatNeck and they make a few aluminum flashlights calling them "GreatLite". They're available at some auto parts stores -- you have to look for them as I've only found them at an Auto Zone or Pep Boys auto parts store. They offer a 2AA size, a 2D and 3D size flashlight. For as inexpensive it is, its pretty sturdy and being its aluminum -- very durable like a Maglite or Streamlight body.
If anyone is looking for a cheap 'host', this is it. It only costs around $12 for the 2D flashlight. All the Greatlites I've seen have an adjustable focusing head like a Maglite. The bulb mount is on a plate screwed into the body tube. You can put in a drop-in LED module to make it an LED light but it comes with a Krypton bulb and spare in the tailcap.
I'm fascinated by all your articles but haven't read all of your posts. Others write some good articles, too. I'm retired fire department for over 3 years now. I used to work on my department's flashlights -- always fixing them and also working on the personal flashlights of the local policemen associated with the local area I used to work in. I always like to fumble & fix things -- mostly electrical stuff but I'm not an electrician. I want to start building or modding a good personal flashlight I can use. I recently made 2 orders from DealExtreme and its hard to believe their prices on things --- low!!
I don't know how many characters I can send before this shuts down. I'll say more later about flashlights as I have several questions to ask the members and to yourself.

If you plan on changing the battery keep in mind it's gonna get hot. Mine needed a new heat sink and fan but with my heavy duty fan and heatsink combo I can easily keep pushing 1.6 amps to the led. I did some tuning of it's circuitry and it pulls that much continuously, it's actually quite bright. 30,000+ lux with a bigger more useful hotspot than my HS-802.
