Can someone please explain the differences in Lambertian, Side Emitting, etc. Which ones are best suited to particular applications? The search function for the forum is down, and a Google search yeilds information which is difficult for a layman to understand. Any help would be much appreciated.

Look about page 14 and after on this data sheet to see the graphs for lambertian, bat wing and side emitters.
Generally lambertian is used for throw, side emitters for flood.
