Burning Man is great fun - I plan on going for the fourth time this year. I won't try to describe it, when
the web site or a google search will do it much more extensively.
While being a flashaholic doesn't necessarily mean you'll enjoy Burning Man, it's certainly a place where it comes in handy. Much of the activity happens at night, after the heat of the desert day, and it's far from urban light sources. Distinctive lighting helps your friends keep track of you, and helps cyclists avoid you, as well as being part of your personal expression. There are some
AMAZING EL-wire creations, and wonderful illuminated costumes and conveyances and camps of all sorts. And of course, you're camping in the desert, so you need light for camp activities and finding your way to the porta-potties.
While there isn't much need for ultra-bright long-distance illumination, it can be handy to have; and an E2 flashed into the thick air in the middle of a raging dust storm blowing over a dance party looks really cool. So do little things like a blue Photon light clipped deep into the folds of a bridal veil.
This year, illumination will be even more important, as the moon will be heading toward its Sept. 6th new moon, so it will be dim and up at inconvenient times. Last year, the moon was close to full, and thus would rise soon after sunset.
The Man burns on Saturday night, so a large portion of the population chooses to try to avoid the departure backup by leaving Sunday day or night; if you leave camp on Sunday evening, I suggest leaving some flashing lights or other distinctive markers at your camp, as the local landscape may end up changing so much that you'll have difficulty otherwise. (A bad few have been known to steal the street signs as souvenirs).
It's not for everyone, but if you go, I hope you have fun!
