Hey guys,

So I aquired an Osram Joule LED module, normally found in the 06 Mercury Mountaineer Stop/Tail Light.

It is a complete unit, that is actually pretty beefy.

Does anyone know how I can tell what is needed to drive it without frying it? I imagine it is just 12V direct, since it is designed for automotive use...but would love to be on the safe side.

Any ideas?

find someone with the original donor car and V/O meter it?

It's actually a part obtained from Sylvania itself, so I do not have an avalable donor car...and the Ford dealer won't be too keen on me asking to open up one of their mountaineer tail lights :grin2:

I was trying to see if anyone knew a way to check it :)

Hook it up to a bench supply and monitor voltage and current as you slowly ramp up the voltage. Also, monitor the voltage on a single LED.

This is definatly the way to go.
On the other hand does it have a general ground connection? does the wire going to it have more than 2 leeds. it ay be a 2 stage light if it is a break light. if it uses the cars common ground then 12V (really 13.8) should be fine.
if not then definatly follow the directions below.

It has a 3 pin connector...so I am guessing it is ground, stop, and tail....
