Little help with G&P 3w drop in please

Just purchased a G&P 3w LED drop in for my 6P and it fits but the lamp assembly and works on the bench but not in the light. It's an old (I think I can remember buying it in about 1992) 6P and when I place it in the torch and put it together it doesn't work. The lamp assembly doesn't appear to reach the un-anodised contact area at the base of the lamp assembly head to allow a circuit. I saw the G2 has a spring that does the job so I pulled a spring off a blown R500 globe put it on the assembly and installed. Success!! Now is it me or should it work without the spring? Or did they change the dimensions of the 6P at some time in the last 15 years and I missed it? Or am I just useless at lego? Any advice appreciated.

My experience has mostly been with G2,G2Z,and 3P but the light's vary somewhat.
Some need that spring and some don't. I had a drop in the other day that wouldn't
work in anything I had except my 3p so you never know. Sound's like your a flashaholic
to me!

I have a 6P, but it is less than 1 year old. The 3W G&P works OK.

Most of the times I have seen this is poor or no contact with the ground/body of the light (NEG of battery).
