Madeleine L'Engle has passed away. Her 'children's' book, A Wrinkle in Time, really got me interested in science. And that science interest probably plays a big part in my interest in flashlights. She didn't like being labelled a children's author, however; she didn't like underestimating her audience! She's won a Newbery Medal and a National Humanities Medal. Humanity has lost another bright light.

Yahoo News Story: 'A Wrinkle in Time' author L'Engle dies.

I heard this on the news while driving home. I felt a saddness even though it took a moment to remember why she was so important to my childhood. I remember little of the book other than being entranced by it. I also remember trying to envision a tesseract. :)
