Budget boost driver for M@G mod

I've started my first "real" M@G project; 2D host w/ 3C. I've started the machine work on the heat sink and decided on a SB Q5 or R2. Suggestions for a budget regulated boost driver? I've looked at the SS BB750 but I'd really like more drive current (~1A). I'll try a P7 or MCE later...

Is your intention to ultimately run it on 2D cells or 3C? And alkaline or nickel? The BadBoy is boost-only, and I don't recall the driver's behavior above that, so it might be better suited for 2-cell than 3. Maybe the GD1000 for a 3-cell set-up?

Yep, I should have been clearer.... want to run it on 3 NiMH C cells. I know that DD will work but I'd really like to keep it regulated. So, boost only? boost/buck? punt????
