where to start with luxeon experiments?

Does anybody have any suggestions on where to start with my first Luxeon experiments? I have a couple emitters, and no documentation what-so-ever. I'm not ready to mod a torch with them yet, I just want to play with them, wire them up, and experiment them. I need to figure out the real "square one" basics, like:

1 - which of the contacts on the base do I use for what polarity?
2 - what voltage is safe for direct feed?
3 - what's my minimum/maximum desired mA rating for power supply?

I realize they will need a heat sink, and that's one of the things I want to experiment with, like how much heat do they produce, etc. I'm thinking of making some wall wart powered area lighting before I start doing flashlights with them.

Thanks for suggestions on some hopefully idiot-proof resources that will get me rolling.

First off, try here:

http://www.lumileds.com/products/documentation_index.html

They have the spec sheets online for all their products.

1 - Usually, the LED has a small "dot" on the bottom. That's the + contact. If it doesn't the lead that forms a complete hole is the +.
2 - For 1 watt Luxeons, I know 4.5V is safe on alkalines, MR Bulk ships the Space Needles running on 9V (that's a 5W)
3 - milkyspit discussed a power supply here. If I were just getting started again, I'd buy this first. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB6&Number=284598&PHPSESSID=&fpart=1#Post284598
