After reading the post about the SF KL5, does anyone know if the 1W is only 500 hrs compared to 100,000 hrs for a 5mm LED? How about the new 3 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif watters.

IIRC:

Most 1 watts driven to spec can do 50,000 hours plus.

Most 3 watts driven to spec can do 20,000 hours plus.

Most 5 watts " " can do 500 hours plus.

The 5mm's vary a lot. If driven to spec, some can go for 100,000. However, if overdriven significantly, the life can be signifcantly shorter (under 10,000 hours).

IIRC....

From Lumileds' own data sheets:

1W star

[ QUOTE ]
Average Lumen Maintenance Characteristics
Lifetime for solid-state lighting devices (LEDs) is typically defined in terms of
lumen maintenance—the percentage of initial light output remaining after a
specified period of time. Lumileds projects that Luxeon products will deliver on
average 70% lumen maintenance at 50,000 hours of operation.
This
performance is based on independent test data, Lumileds historical data from
tests run on similar material systems, and internal Luxeon reliability testing.
This projection is based on constant current 350 mA operation with junction
temperature maintained at or below 90°C.
Observation of design limits
included in this data sheet is required in order to achieve this projected lumen
maintenance.

Note:
Luxeon V Portable is designed primarily for portable lighting and other applications requiring operating lifetimes of 500 hours and less. While the device will operate past 500 hours, its lumen maintenance cannot yet be characterized. Longer life versions of white Luxeon V will become available in the future.
Average lumen maintenance is dependant on heat-sink temperature. A recoverable light output loss may occur during the first 500 hours of operation.

The 5W is only available as the portable for white.

I was going to quote the runtimes for standard Vs, but that page seems to be missing from their datasheet.

Thanks for all the data. Long life is one of the main reasons I go for an LED.

What does "portable" mean?
I have a cyan 5 watt - it's gorgeous. If it lasts "only" 500 hours at full strength I'll be very happy. $30 for 500 hours of awesome light is not exactly extravagant.

The "portable" is marketing speak for "not up to spec" IMO

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dedhorse.gif

Instead of continuing to have to say "Sorry we can´t bring the 5 Watter to the originally expected/projected life span" they decided to make a "feature" out of it - voilà the "Portable" 5Watter was born. Its just like with software / hardware - its not a bug but a feature /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your cyan 5W will last 50K hours.
