How many cells can I run a KL4 head on safely?

I know I can run it on an E2 body (2 cells.) That is the normal state. I can run it on an E1 body (1 cell) aka TW4 with reduced brightness. Is it safe to run from 3 cells. What effect would that have on brightness and runtime?

3 123 cells is not recommended. Depending on Vf of your LED, it may run for hundreds of hours or a few minutes and then go out (forever). The L4 uses a boost circuit so the battery voltage must be less than the Vf of the LED plus a Schottky drop. Anything over that will direct drive the LED.

Thanks. I had a vague memory it was a bad idea because the voltage was too high, but wasn't sure. Would rather ask than burn up my nice new (to me) KL4 head. I am rather shocked but in less than 8 hours it has replaced my ever present E2E. I really didn't expect this to happen, but other than my McLux 3 cell body w/ a P91LA I have gone entirely LED for EDC.
