The best tip is....
Don't ever give others your passwords.
Don't give strangers accounts.
Turn off the services (like FTP servers) that you are not using.
For burning CDs, it's often best to set up a dummy directory with all the stuff you want on the CD. It's also a good idea to have the CD on a seperate IDE channel than the hard disk.
