An utter newbie asks: Is there a reference I can use to learn basic LED electronics? For example, what sort of LED I can use with 2 AA cells, and which is the positive contact on the LED - the long or the short?

Like I said, newbie! Although I do have an almost pristine Maglight that is 25 years old....

Thanks!

A quick suggestion would be to check out the LED FAQ at this link. At very minimum, that should answer at least some of your questions.

The (+) positive lead of a typical LED is the longer of the two leads. This can vary, but not very often.

You can use red LEDs directly with 2AA cells, however, if you are thinking about which type of white LED, then you will need to find something to step up the voltage to 3.5-4.0V,(Volts)
