Well firstly I found this rather interesting booklight in a light fixture contest.

Definitely unique. Looks good but I'm not sure how bright it would be. Unfortunately the lamp didn't win the content so the manufacturer's website has been scraped. There's a bit more info here:

Also there's a bit of talk about a new type of SSCL EL lamp where the phosphors are encapsulated in a ceramic. Apparently it should be "compatible with high volume, low cost production."

Imagine if EL does become a viable lighting medium. The only EL lamp I've seen is on my Cassiopeia which isn't exactly what you would call bright!
