Is there any competition for my Surge?

Well?
For around the same amount of money. Does the Surge have an equal in light output, throw? My Princeton Tec Surge cost about $28.00.
I didn't think so. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

I've owned mine for about a year and I'm still totally blown away by how much throw and total output the Surge has for the price. To my eyes, a 4D Mag (even with a stock bulb) has a tad more throw, but certainly not the total output. And not as small as the Surge.

Yeah, if you're just talking about output vs. price, it does:

How about a 1 or 2 MCP cheapo spotlight from Target or where-ever?

Personally, I'd rather have the Surge, but since you asked, there it is.

a surge is not 7.5 watt
I measured about 500 ma thru one of the aa cells
so it is more like a 5.5 to 6 watt light
(2 sets of 4aa in parallel)
try to cary a thor on a 10 mile hike.
the surge will blow away a thor after the thor has been on for 45 minutes.

Over on the lanterns thread they have been saying the Thor was being found for around $25.00 at Costco.

According to the info at Brightguy.com, the SL6 is about 2 inches longer, a bit bulkier in the hand, and heavier (20 oz vs 10 oz) than the Surge. A small price to pay for almost double the lumen output (200 vs 115).

But then again... you already knew that. You *know* the UK SL6 is calling you, MLong...

Why try to resist? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif

For $25, you could mod your Brinkmann Legend LX with a Surefire P61 Lamp Module, yielding 120 lumen output for 20 minutes.

The mod instructions are here:

Anybody know how the Surge or SL6 would perform with NiMH batteries? Would the decreased internal resistance compensate for the reduced voltage, compared to alkalines? I've read that lithiums in the Surge are contraindicated, as the lamp is already driven very hard by alkalines, and will likely blow out if pushed by lithiums.

Costco which is a warehouse type store in the US has them.
They waited until I bought mine before putting them out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

I guess I'm going to have to rephrase my question.

Is there any competition for my Surge's light output for the same money or less and in the same SIZE as the Surge. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

a 2C mag with 3x123 and 5-cell krypton bulb seems to be right in that neighborhood for performance and can be had for a few cents under $20, all told (at least, that's the best price I could manage). Or, for about $2 more you could cram 4x123 and a 6 or 7 cell bulb in the same body.
