Had a walk on an unlit, foggy, country road last night and was very pleased with my "cheapo" Luxeon unit, the black-body model offered on ebay with two AA battery compartment on the forehead.

I could see up to about 20 yards out.

The 12-LED, which has the exact same body, was effective only at looking at the blacktop directly ahead, or about 20 feet maximum. These have the brightest LEDs I've seen.

Only problem is that the ratchet plastic to hold the light angle in place breaks off. In some cases, the light becomes too loose unless a thread-lock is applied. In most cases, the light head doesn't require thread-lock, anyway.

I like the 12-led headlamp for reading, not blue, with NiMH batteries.

The Luxeon bulbed headlamp has concentric rings of diminishing strength, and is too bright for reading, but great for garage/workshop use, as a "main light".
