Based on one of the other threads concerning flourescant lights, it would appear that power conservation is not a serious matter, light fixture endurance is. Since that report of the report focuses on the power savings and not endurance, it could be that the $500 million market size could be substantially off. Time spent changing bulbs is a complete waste of money, and the efficiencies gained from lights that do not need to be changed for years could change the general lighting market in ways not addressed by that report.
Home designs with built in light controllers exist today in mansions, in five years, they will probably be standard because the endurance of lights will allow them to be installed into the fixtures of the house. Every ten years the light will need to be changed, but that is longer than current roofs last.
