anybody buy wide beam safe-light?

Got a coupon from email newsletter and can get these for half price ($7.50). How much wider is the beam then a palight? Is it just a led without any optics?

I made my PALight E-Light a "wide angle" by roughing up the lense with some fine sandpaper. It works quite nicely.
