My brother had one of those and if I remember right it uses the smaller 3mm led, so your choices may be reduced. If you found a brighter one, it would probally be pretty easy to mod, I don't think there are and circuits or anything, just cut the LED to the right length, and put it in.

I have some 15000 mCd 3mm LEDs. I think I saw 18K ones also.
