What lights do you sacrifice for your car, garage or shed duty ?

I'm just reconsidering this question. Having just bought a couple of new torches I have to decide what to do with the old ones. Up until now I've had an old Surefire U2 in the boot, that uses 2 CR123s. It never got used, but this weekend I pulled it out and it still seems to work fine despite it...

Is there a safe way to use this 10-year-old 18650?

The voltage now is 3.91. So it's dropped a bit since 3.97, but it's in the 100ths of a volt and room temperature is probably colder this morning. I had to fish it out of my recycling bag to measure that. How long should it take to reach full charge from there? My charger is a Cytac CY-U10D...

Is there a safe way to use this 10-year-old 18650?

Thanks, but... how were the conditions improper? It wasn't connected to anything, just sitting on a shelf. How could the protection circuit make any difference? And isn't it normal for a cell to drop voltage slightly for a few minutes after being taken off charge?

Is there a safe way to use this 10-year-old 18650?

I just bought a new 18650 torch, and a new battery to go with it. I also have an old battery that was bought for a Surefire U2 back in 2005, from Lighthound. It is a protected 2200mAh. This was flat. It's been sitting on a shelf, virtually untouched, for 10 years. (The U2 has Cr123s.) I forget...

    A Tribute to Nitecore D10

I'm today retiring my D10. I'm not sure which version it is, except that it's old and doesn't have a strobe. I've been carrying it every day for about 7 years, so it's a bit beat up, but its only actual fault is that it gets a bit noisy on the higher settings. I came on here to find out more...

Who's buying yourself a new light for Christmas?

More of a New Year's gift, but I've just had delivered a Zebralight SC5 Fw and an SC600 mk II L2. I'm in the UK and couldn't find a supplier for a mk III, and I wanted it now. (And now I want it to get dark.) This is after a fairly long absence. My previous EDC was a NiteCore D10, which I guess...

    Different UI experiences and recommendations

My problem with infinitely variable control is not being sure about impact on battery life. My EDC is a Nitecore D10, and although I love the torch generally I'd rather it had 6 or 8 levels instead of 256. I'm also not keen on memory. The torch may remember but I probably wont, so there's a...

Geiger counters, radiation detectors, lets see 'em

Manage your exposure. Many of the dangerous materials also have short half-lives. After a nuke event, you can hope to shelter in place (if you can get plenty of mass between you and outside), and after a couple of weeks it could be safe to go out again. Depending on how bad the radiation levels...

    The Best UI ever?...Maybe not...

Using a flashlight should not be like learning a musical instrument. Sure, you have to know how it works; I have no problem with that. The problem with Zebralight is not that it's complicated, it's that it's error-prone. The timing difference between selecting the dimmest level and the brightest...

What was the last LED light you purchased and why?

Zipka 2+ and ZEBRA-H502 headlamps. My previous Zipka broke on holiday. I like the form factor because the retracting cord is more compact than a headband, so got the latest model as a replacement. While researching it, I revisited this forum for the first time in years, and decided to get a...

    The Best UI ever?...Maybe not...

Re: AW: The Best UI ever?...Maybe not... I recent bought a Zebralight and thought the UI was way too error-prone. Here's how it works. From off, you push the button and it comes on at the dimmest level - so dim you may have to be looking at the LED to check it is on. If you then release, it...

Are batteries made for flashlights, or flashlights made for batteries?

Most of my recent cameras (and mobile phones) have had specialised LiIon batteries. I like small gadgets, which means small batteries, and generally they have a flat form-factor that's more or less ideal for the device. Where-as all my torches use pre-existing batteries. If batteries were even...

Who recycles their batteries and how?

In West Bridgeford, UK batteries recently got included in the kerbside recycling scheme. You don't put them in the big wheelie bin. Instead you put them in a little plastic bag they give you, and attach it to the bin. Before that I just kept my old batteries in a tray in the kitchen, with some...

    Nitecore D10 on the way!

That's about where my GDP stopped worked when I did a run-time test on low.

NiteCore Golden Dragon Plus D10 & EX10 Reviews: BEAMSHOTS, RUNTIMES, etc.

I've just completed my own crude D10 GDP runtime test on low with an Eneloop. I got a total of 55 hours 6 minutes. When I recharged the battery, the charger said it put 1866 mAh back into it, which is a bit below the 2000mAh the battery is supposed to have. I had charged the battery the...
