I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have a single filament 1000W 28V GE 4556
that they would be willing to sell?

i have two 600W LarryK's and I would love to make one a 1000W.
Thanks
James

Ok I'm going to jump in with both feet & buy a 28v 600w GE 4559 bulb but I am a total newbie to this game.
My understanding is that this is a 22 amp bulb - I = P/E = 600Watt / 28 Volt = 21.5 Amp
and my intention is to run it from 3 or 4 12volt SLA batteries (I know the run time will be short) are there any suggestions on how to lower the 36/48v supply to 28 volts?
As far as I can surmise none of those neat buck convertors on Ebay are rated at this high power level.

I assume you saw this thread? http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?295756-Pre-Order-JM-PhD-X1-PWM-Lantern-Regulator

Not that there are any new ones left but maybe you could "advertise Want To Buy" over on the CPF Market Place and maybe you'll get lucky. There's not much out there to run these in a portable fashion.

If you haven't bought the bulb yet, I hoarded a bunch of new-in-box Q4559x's and would sell you one for 15% cheaper (purchase and shipping combined) than any place you can find selling them. I don't need 8 bulbs laying around.

I can get a Q4559 [you're x version has even higher light output] for $33 or £22 shipped here in the UK. I wouldn't like to try shipping internationally, I'm in Scotland.
Can I ask some stupid questions here -hopefully it'll help other noobs?
Say I charge each SLA to a 10volt output level (I've read on other threads about this bulb being overdriven to 32v) although I don't like the idea of venturing out with undercharges cells.
Or step down each individual SLA from 12v to 10v with this > http://prntscr.com/5qpjhe
I've seen some motor speed controllers with high power options, can they perform the same task as these step down modules? > http://prntscr.com/5qpktt
Lastly a very stupid question, can these IC chips perform step down tasks, while do I need one of the larger boards? http://prntscr.com/5qplgj

I've heard/read/seen incan projects where people have used the control systems out of power chairs for power control.... I can't imagine how efficient they would be but might be a cheap/easy solution to look into.
I highly do not recommend partly charged SLAs as a solution at that currant, good chance you'll quickly over deplete them and shorten their lifespan dramatically, if not kill them outright.

Didn't realize you're in Scotland - shipping would definitely be a killer. An SLA is fully depleted at 10.5 Volts so that's not a solution. I don't know electronics well enough to know if you can parallel 3 of those small DC DC converters off a Series'd bank of SLA's.

You can parallel them but it's not recommended. The slight voltage differences between them cause issues unless there's some sort of backfeed prevention, and even then it's not that effective.

If you haven't bought the batteries yet, what about 5x 6 volt SLA's in series?
I've got 40 ( yes Forty) 12 volt SLAs I won on an internet auction for $5, no joke, my best purchase ever. :twothumbs
I didn't realise dropping a 36v supply to 28v with a 21 amp load wold prove so difficult or expensive & now I've been put off the idea of this bulb.
I'm now looking at a twin 24v 250w set up, these bulbs cost around £3 (although I did win 9 for $4!).
At this rate my build cost will be around £3 picking up bargains here & there.

I bought the last available JM-PhD-X1 regulator, I ended up not using it.

Id be happy to sell it for what I paid for it.

It is set for 30v initial on(overdrive) and 28v second button push (normal drive).

This is what I have both my larryK's set to and works well.
Let me know if your interested.

Sorry my electrical knowledge is very limited. I might hook this board up incorrectly & poof :eek:oo: it'd be dead.
My budget doesn't run this far for tinkering around in this hobby. Also I've gone off the idea of using this bulb,
powering it is proving problematic, the bulb life is probably very limited & lastly if I damaged the bulb in the field
it'd be a high cost to replace. I've read elsewhere the 1000w version was a dissapointment for one user, so the lower cost 600w version
was the one I was considering, but now a twin 250w 24v (500w?), bulb cost $6 setup is what I'm planning with no mods required to my power supply.
I KISS, keep it simple stupid. :candle:
Ths is was I got up to today, not powered it up yet >
