Re: High Powered "D" Maglite Drop in *Updated with Prototype*

Hello tshirley,
There will be only one version available. It will run on one Li-ion cell (4.2v) or up to 6v in various combinations of cells. For instance 3D cells or 4D cells. There will be different tints available. If you want to be added to the list then you must edit your post adding yourself at the end of the list. Just trying to help.
Thanks,
Frank

$89? I have a spare 4D!
I'm in, neutral or warm is fine.
Oh and I think the face of that heatsink needs a few slots put in for tritium!

Wait! I said I'd be in a year ago if there was a warm option! LoL guess I'm still ready even if I missed the list early on. I don't understand the dowel rods, what are we screwing it into again?

The drop-in screws into the head. I will be working this drop-in next week. I may just go with SST-50 LED. 4500k and 6500k.......stay tuned :)

Re: High Powered "D" Maglite Drop in *Updated with Prototype*

Hi:

I've been lurking this thread for quite a while. If you do go with an SST-50, I'll be interested. Did you know that fivemega has reported that 3@ Ni-ZN cells pull 4.2 amps with an SST-90. 4.2 amps on a 1D body with a 3aa holder is very appealing. for a longer run, an 4000 mAh IMR-26500 would pull > 3A. I'm assuming that you would use a direct-drive 3-level controller.

What sort of otf lumens would we be looking at with the SST-50, 4500k and 6500k respectively, and also is there a price increase?

Better top up the PP. Think I will have two of these.

Re: High Powered "D" Maglite Drop in *Updated with Prototype*

If the SST-50 is used there will be a price increase.

I was going for a 100% drop in........as in no tools needed.....no need for a special reflector or to modify the existing reflector. The SST-50 LED's are to expensive at more than double the cost of the MC-E and there is no readily available reflectors for the SST suitable for this application.
Mac

Mac --I guess you solved the issue of "no readily available reflector" suitable for this SST-50 LED's?

Previously you indicated that with your current driver there was no advantage to using the SST-50.
If your post below still applies then I would prefer the MC-E.

Both the MC-E and SST-50 have approximately the same output at 2.8 amps. The benifit of the SST-50 is that it can focus better with a small reflector, so in a design like this drop-in there is no benifit to have the SST-50.

I see the SST-50, so I'm in if the current isn't regulated.

Re: High Powered "D" Maglite Drop in *Updated with Prototype*

Very nice Mac, it is good to see the project started.

Any idea what the new price will be? I'm torn now between what color to get. I may have to get one of each. Some beam shots of the two color options would be nice.

I have a warm SST-90 and I'm not fond of it because it has a greenish tint to me. I'm curious if the 50's will be any different.

Re: High Powered "D" Maglite Drop in *Updated with Prototype*

I'm sure that in the 14 pages worth of text containing info you might have some beamshots or runtime info, but I have searched this thread for a while and now am just going to ask :tired:. Do you have any beamshots? I would love to see this jewel in action. If you do have beamshots and I seemed to have missed them could you redirect me?

Also this is a beautiful product, very well made. I wish to ask, could you be able to make a more powerful one using a 6D configuration? It seems to me that there is a calling for such a product.

In any case I am very interested in getting one of the 4D for my search light in my truck. I just would like to have more info on beam pattern, distance, and brightness, along with runtimes of levels. For this reason (if not already done) I ask that you send one to selfbuilt and have him do a full review of your product.
