LED bar graph/lcd display help

So basically I want to make an LED bar graph coupled with an LCD display for voltage. I want to ditch the junk stock voltage meter in my Jeep in favor of something that shows direct voltage output on the battery terminals.

Would love to get some help on how I should go about doing this, because quite frankly I have no idea how to do that.

For simplicity I would use the innards of a cheap multi-meter for the digital read-out and an LM3916 bargraph driver ic for the leds.
