i just bought a new Fenix H70R and noticed the spot is a Luminus LED. Never heard of them before.

(Yes, I've fallen off the wagon and purchased another unneeded light. I've been a CPF member since 2005 and don't visit very often anymore. I thought I had the flashaholic thing under control, but the temptation was too great.)

I read the specs for the Fenix and thought it would be interesting to see how well a 21700 based light works but was very surprised to learn it uses a Luminus LED.

Back the day, Cree was always the gold standard for LEDs. Prior to this purchase, I'd never even heard of Luminus. When did Luminus become mainstream?

They started to pop up here around 2010. They were initially best known for high brightness and even higher heat generation. I think the Olight SR-95 was the first mainstream commercial flashlight that used the SST-90, which was a real beast for its time. They have recently gotten into the high-CRI game with the SST-20.
