Re: $100 -- the \"money shot\"

Streamlight's Night Com UV will fluoresce the 100 dollar bill.

Re: $100 -- the \"money shot\"

This is 10 years later, but the only UV light that I found that can fluoresce the $100 is the Nitecore CU-6 UV. I think it is a true 365 nm wavelength as it is not as purple as my other UV lights and fluoresces items like scorpions, credit card and drivers license items much brighter than the purple UV lights, which are 395nm or higher; closer to visible spectrum, hence more purple.

I agree the CU-6 is the real deal

this thread Nitecore Tube UV 365nm 500mW (Spring of 2016) uncovered the fact that the Nitecore Tube UV will not reveal the redline on a US $100, and the CU6 will

also the CU6 has 6 times the power of the Tube UV

this thread Looking for a UV Light uncovered a few other true 365 UV options, notably the budget priced Convoy S2+ UV, but it only has 1/4 the power of the CU-6

I found a thread that shows the Convoy UV does light up the red line on the US$100

Re: $100 -- the \"money shot\"

Nightstick Mini-TAC UV Penlight (2XAAA) is 365 nm and seems to be decent quality for about $25. It gets the most use of all my UV lights. The latest version of the INOVA X5UV might work,it is better than the older model X5UV that was 395-400nm.Unfortunately I don't have a $100 bill to test it on right now.

thanks, good to have an AAA option
I wonder how many mW the Mini-Tac UV produces, and I would like to see it show the $100 red line.

For the records. Convoy S2+ with ZWB2 filter.

The Convoy uses a 780mW led, so the 3000mw CU6 has almost 4x the power, (and costs 5x as much)

I realize this is an old thread, but I'd still like to share some relevant information.

This thread predates the introduction of the new (2013) $100 note. The old (1996) $100s were notorious for having security threads that were very difficult to fluoresce under UV. The one I have just barely shows up as pinkish under my SRT7GT. The new $100 is better in this regard, though the security thread still isn't as bright as, say, the one on the $50 note, which comes up as a bright yellow. I'd check all the other security features on the old $100 note:

  • Color-changing ink in the "100" in the lower right corner of the obverse (green to purplish-black)
  • Watermark matching the portrait of Franklin on the obverse, visible from both sides
  • Security thread under visible light with alternating "USA 100" text, visible from both sides
  • Raised (intaglio) printing
  • Microprinting along Franklin's jacket collar ("THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA") and inside the "100" in the bottom left of the obverse (repeating "USA 100" pattern)

fwiw, the following pic shows the AAA Jetbeam Jet-UV will fluoresce the redline on the new US $100

I ordered a Jetbeam Jet-UV and will update if I cannot duplicate that red security line detection

Same results here with Jetbeam Jet-UV, barely lights up the old $100:

Its my first UV light, Im happy with it Battery life if short, and it gets warm in use.. like running my AAA Tool on High.. some really neat effects from looking at LEDs (these are not On, its just the excitement from the UV)
